Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 187%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Burundi (X tons) were the main destinations of fish parts exports from Uganda, with a combined 80% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burundi (with a CAGR of +41.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Canada ($X) constituted the largest markets for fish parts exported from Uganda worldwide, together comprising 95% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +59.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average fish parts export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, overseas purchases of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -97.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 358%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fish parts imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 198% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main supplier of fish parts to Uganda, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, fish parts imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya totaled +4.7%.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fish heads, tails and maws to Uganda, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya amounted to +1.3%.
Import Prices by Country
The average fish parts import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 68% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 76% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania stood at $X per ton.
