In value terms, book folding machine exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X units) was the main destination for book folding machine exports from Uganda, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, book folding machine exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Rwanda (X units), with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan totaled -13.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-17.3% per year) and Rwanda (-6.7% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for folding machines for books exports from Uganda, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 7.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Sudan stood at -5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-24.3% per year) and Rwanda (+3.0% per year).

In 2022, the average book folding machine export price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of folding machines for books increased by 16% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, book folding machine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 196%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X units) constituted the largest book folding machine supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, book folding machine imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X units), fourfold. Italy (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India amounted to +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+31.3% per year) and Italy (-1.1% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Italy ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest book folding machine suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 84% of total imports.

The UK, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
