Frozen Chicken Cut Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan frozen chicken cut market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Frozen chicken cut production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of frozen cuts of chicken, when their volume increased by 125% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 141%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen chicken cut exports from Uganda.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +42.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for frozen cuts of chicken exports from Uganda, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda stood at +49.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+19.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-9.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average frozen chicken cut export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -16.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 75%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, purchases abroad of frozen cuts of chicken increased by 117% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest frozen chicken cut supplier to Uganda, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen chicken cut imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X tons), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+0.2% per year) and Belgium (-22.7% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Poland ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the largest frozen chicken cut suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 65% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average frozen chicken cut import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -28.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 59%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+22.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
