Ghee Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan ghee market contracted markedly to $X in 2022, declining by -37.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a deep setback. Ghee consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Ghee Production in Uganda
In value terms, ghee production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Ghee Exports
Exports from Uganda
In 2022, exports of ghee from Uganda rose markedly to X tons, growing by 7.9% on the previous year. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 72%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ghee exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 113%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X tons) was the main destination for ghee exports from Uganda, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, ghee exports to Egypt exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Tanzania (X tons), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Egypt amounted to +45.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+8.0% per year) and Tanzania (+29.2% per year).
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the key foreign market for ghee exports from Uganda, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Egypt amounted to +47.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+19.6% per year) and Tanzania (+42.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average ghee export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ghee Imports
Imports into Uganda
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of ghee decreased by -29.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2,478%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ghee imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 4,004%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest ghee supplier to Uganda, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, ghee imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (X tons), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +163.4%.
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ghee to Uganda, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India stood at +205.8%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ghee import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 94%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Switzerland totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
