Grape Market Size in Uganda
In 2022, the Ugandan grape market increased by 11% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption enjoyed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
Grape exports from Uganda skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, rising by 386% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 2,146% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grape exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 3,910%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for grape exports from Uganda, accounting for a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, grape exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan amounted to +10.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+7.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.0% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for grapes exports from Uganda, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan totaled +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+25.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -65.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 287% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+31.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Grape Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, supplies from abroad of grapes was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 173%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grape imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 184% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grape to Uganda, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, grape imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa amounted to +43.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+15.6% per year) and Spain (+0.6% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest grape suppliers to Uganda, with a combined 98% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, South Africa, with a CAGR of +41.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average grape import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 38%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
