Hand-Operated Air Pump Market Size in Uganda

After two years of growth, the Ugandan hand-operated air pump market decreased by -19% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +63.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Hand-operated air pump exports from Uganda soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 52% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 296%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, hand-operated air pump exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 142% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X units) was the main destination for hand-operated air pump exports from Uganda, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, hand-operated air pump exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), more than tenfold. Rwanda (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan totaled +32.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+25.0% per year) and Rwanda (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for hand or foot-operated air pumps exports from Uganda, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Sudan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +22.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (+3.9% per year) and Burundi (-18.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average hand-operated air pump export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 262%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of hand or foot-operated air pumps, when their volume decreased by -14.7% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hand-operated air pump imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of hand-operated air pump to Uganda, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, hand-operated air pump imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X units), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+99.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+28.2% per year).

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) were the largest hand-operated air pump suppliers to Uganda, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +101.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average hand-operated air pump import price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 88%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
