Market Size for Hot-Rolled Steel Bars and Rods in Uganda

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21%. Hot-rolled steel bar and rod production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from Uganda skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, rising by 93% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from Uganda, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), threefold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan amounted to +27.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-7.1% per year) and Burundi (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for hot-rolled steel bars and rods exports from Uganda, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Sudan amounted to +24.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-9.4% per year) and Burundi (-3.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (-1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of hot-rolled steel bars and rods increased by 37% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 109%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports to Uganda, together comprising 73% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Kenya ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest hot-rolled steel bar and rod suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 73% of total imports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
