The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Exports from Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of household articles and toilet articles of plastics were exported from Uganda; picking up by 510% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient increase. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plastic household articles exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded resilient growth. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for plastic household articles exports from Uganda, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic household articles exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), twofold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan totaled +51.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.4% per year) and Burundi (+8.7% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for household articles and toilet articles of plastics exports from Uganda, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan amounted to +52.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.7% per year) and Burundi (+9.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average plastic household articles export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Plastic Household Articles Imports
Imports into Uganda
Plastic household articles imports into Uganda fell rapidly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -23.1% on the year before. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 679% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plastic household articles imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 588% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic household articles to Uganda, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic household articles imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya totaled +28.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+15.0% per year) and China (+13.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest plastic household articles suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), China ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports. The UK, Turkey and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +57.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average plastic household articles import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
