Exports from Uganda
In 2022, shipments abroad of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) was finally on the rise to reach X units after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 153%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 190%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X units), Kenya (X units) and Sudan (X units) were the main destinations of non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports from Uganda, together comprising 53% of total exports. The Netherlands, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Jamaica and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) exports from Uganda, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sudan totaled -4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+8.4% per year) and Ghana (+28.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average non-combined refrigerator-freezer export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 142%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Jamaica ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+47.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, overseas purchases of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) decreased by -16.7% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 79%. Imports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest non-combined refrigerator-freezer supplier to Uganda, with a 90% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units), with a 1.3% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X units), with a 1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-9.1% per year) and Thailand (-19.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) to Uganda, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-15.5% per year) and Indonesia (-13.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-combined refrigerator-freezer import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
