Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 3,520% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron or steel bridges exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 5,460%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for iron or steel bridges exports from Uganda, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi (X kg), with a 0.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan stood at -19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (-26.6% per year) and Rwanda (-34.4% per year).
In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for iron or steel bridges and bridge-sections exports from Uganda, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burundi ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sudan amounted to -19.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+6.7% per year) and Rwanda (-25.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average iron or steel bridges export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -16.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+45.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of iron or steel bridges and bridge-sections were imported into Uganda; rising by 12% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 206%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iron or steel bridges imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 181%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest iron or steel bridges supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, iron or steel bridges imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK amounted to +58.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-1.4% per year) and Japan (+3.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest iron or steel bridges suppliers to Uganda were the UK ($X), Japan ($X) and the United States ($X), together accounting for 72% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, the UK, with a CAGR of +60.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average iron or steel bridges import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, iron or steel bridges import price decreased by -27.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
