Knotted Carpet Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan knotted carpet market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a drastic downturn. Knotted carpet consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X square meters of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings were exported from Uganda; picking up by 825% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knotted carpet exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted pronounced growth. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X square meters) was the main destination for knotted carpet exports from Uganda, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, knotted carpet exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters), twofold. Sudan (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tanzania totaled +29.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1% per year) and Sudan (+2.2% per year).

In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings exports from Uganda, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sudan amounted to +10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+0.6% per year) and Tanzania (+25.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average knotted carpet export price amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -35.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 329% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings increased by 247% to X square meters in 2022. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, knotted carpet imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 326%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X square meters) constituted the largest knotted carpet supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, knotted carpet imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iran (X square meters), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at -19.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+59.1% per year) and Iran (+23.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest knotted carpet suppliers to Uganda were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iran ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +71.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average knotted carpet import price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, reducing by -54.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 233%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per square meter), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
