In 2022, the Ugandan lettuce and chicory market decreased by -15.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption saw a slight slump. Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of lettuce and chicory, when their volume increased by 48% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 451% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 448%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Uganda, with a approx. 99% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan totaled +25.3%.

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) also remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Uganda.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Sudan amounted to +21.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The average lettuce and chicory export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Sudan.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Sudan amounted to -3.3% per year.

Lettuce And Chicory Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, lettuce and chicory imports into Uganda contracted markedly to X tons, shrinking by -30.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 152%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 382%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to Uganda, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya stood at +20.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+36.1% per year) and Rwanda (-5.6% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to Uganda, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 30% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands totaled +42.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+19.5% per year) and Rwanda (-20.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average lettuce and chicory import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 104%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+247.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
