In 2022, shipments abroad of maize oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize oil exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 967%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Rwanda (X kg) was the main destination for maize oil exports from Uganda, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, maize oil exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-45.8% per year) and Sweden (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize oil exports from Uganda, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Rwanda amounted to +13.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-39.1% per year) and Sweden (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize oil export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -25.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 505%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+44.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of maize oil, when their volume decreased by -16.9% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize oil imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 124%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize oil to Uganda, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, maize oil imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt amounted to +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (-12.8% per year) and Turkey (+27.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest maize oil suppliers to Uganda were Egypt ($X), Kenya ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize oil import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 45%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
