Overall, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
After four years of growth, shipments abroad of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches decreased by -21.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 836% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, exports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 754% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for exports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches from Uganda, with a 96% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan (X tons), with a 2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya amounted to +78.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+52.7% per year) and South Sudan (-16.8% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches exports from Uganda, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kenya amounted to +68.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+71.7% per year) and South Sudan (+16.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -28.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 99%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+49.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Malt Extract And Food Preparations Of Flour, Meal, And Starch
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches, when their volume decreased by -42.3% to X tons. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 561%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,342%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starch to Uganda, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at -14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+18.8% per year) and Rwanda (+18.1% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches to Uganda, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands amounted to +27.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-14.8% per year) and Poland (-0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 118% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
