Mattress Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan mattress market dropped remarkably to $X in 2022, falling by -22.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Mattress Production in Uganda

In value terms, mattress production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Mattress Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of mattresses was finally on the rise to reach X units after seven years of decline. Overall, exports, however, faced a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 41%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decline. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Kenya (X units) were the main destinations of mattress exports from Uganda, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of -6.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for mattress exported from Uganda were South Sudan ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 88% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, South Sudan, with a CAGR of +3.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mattress export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 226%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+41.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mattress Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, mattress imports into Uganda declined notably to X units, with a decrease of -32.6% on the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 311% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 419% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of mattress to Uganda, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, mattress imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), fivefold. The United Arab Emirates (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +14.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+37.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+7.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest mattress suppliers to Uganda were China ($X), Italy ($X) and the United States ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +44.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mattress import price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -11.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
