Meat Production in Uganda

The average yield of meat in Uganda dropped modestly to X kg per head in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by X%. The meat yield peaked at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.
The number of animals slaughtered for meat production in Uganda contracted modestly to X heads in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. In general, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by X%. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of meat, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of meat exports from Uganda, with a combined X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for meat exported from Uganda were Vietnam ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Rwanda ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.

Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Meat Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of meat were imported into Uganda; with a decrease of X% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of meat to Uganda, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, meat imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (X% per year) and the Netherlands (X% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of meat to Uganda, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (X% per year) and Belgium (X% per year).

In 2022, the average meat import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
