Exports from Uganda
In 2022, exports of molasses (excluding cane molasses) from Uganda shrank rapidly to X tons, dropping by -17.4% against 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 379%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-cane molasses exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 441% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for non-cane molasses exports from Uganda, accounting for a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, non-cane molasses exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya totaled -25.2%.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the key foreign market for molasses (excluding cane molasses) exports from Uganda, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kenya stood at -17.6%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-cane molasses export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+10.3%).

Imports into Uganda
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of molasses (excluding cane molasses) decreased by -27.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 586% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-cane molasses imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 579% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-cane molasses imports to Uganda.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +26.8%).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molasses (excluding cane molasses) to Uganda, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Indonesia totaled +2.4%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-cane molasses import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya totaled $X per ton.
