Market Size for Motorcycles, Scooters and Side-Cars in Uganda

The Ugandan motorcycle, scooter and side-car market contracted markedly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X units) was the main destination for motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports from Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year) and Sudan (X% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for motorcycles, scooters and side-cars exports from Uganda, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan stood at X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year) and Sudan (X% per year).

In 2022, the average motorcycle, scooter and side-car export price amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by X%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X units of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars were imported into Uganda; which is down by X% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In 2022, India (X units) constituted the largest supplier of motorcycle, scooter and side-car to Uganda, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (X% per year) and Japan (X% per year).
