In 2022, the Ugandan market for nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials decreased by -6.6% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. Twine, cordage or textile net consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, approx. X tons of nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials were exported from Uganda; which is down by -9.1% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 254%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, twine, cordage or textile net exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 391%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for twine, cordage or textile net exports from Uganda, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, twine, cordage or textile net exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+57.0% per year) and Kenya (-4.8% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the largest markets for twine, cordage or textile net exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +94.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+24.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Nets of Twine, Cordage, Rope or Textile Materials

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, supplies from abroad of nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials decreased by -14.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 93%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, twine, cordage or textile net imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main suppliers of twine, cordage or textile net imports to Uganda, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Spain, India, the UK, Greece and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +142.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest twine, cordage or textile net suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), China ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +139.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, twine, cordage or textile net import price increased by +72.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
