In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Ugandan market for non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings, when its value increased by 165% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, faced a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings decreased by -11.2% to X square meters in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 574%. The exports peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 1,699% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X square meters) was the main destination for exports of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings from Uganda, accounting for a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sudan (X square meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Burundi (X square meters), with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan stood at +42.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-13.3% per year) and Burundi (+8.9% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings exports from Uganda, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burundi ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan amounted to +76.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+22.7% per year) and Sudan (-22.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings stood at $X per square meter in 2022, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 398% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+23.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Non-PVC Floor, Wall and Ceiling Coverings
Imports into Uganda
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings increased by 126% to X square meters in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 292%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 243%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings to Uganda, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings from Hong Kong SAR exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X square meters), threefold. India (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hong Kong SAR amounted to -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-22.3% per year) and India (+18.1% per year).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 65% of total imports. India, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +29.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for non-PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings stood at $X per square meter in 2022, declining by -17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 65%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per square meter), while the price for Kenya ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
