Office Supply Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan office supply market declined modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a modest increase. Office supply consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Office Supply Production in Uganda

In value terms, office supply production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -11.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Office Supply Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of office or school supplies of plastics was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, office supply exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for office supply exports from Uganda, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, office supply exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to +49.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-16.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Sudan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for office supply exported from Uganda worldwide, together comprising 80% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +58.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average office supply export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 64%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+30.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Office Supply Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, the amount of office or school supplies of plastics imported into Uganda dropped to X tons, shrinking by -11.9% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 71%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, office supply imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest office supply supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, office supply imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-11.1% per year) and Kenya (+6.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of office or school supplies of plastics to Uganda, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+1.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average office supply import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, office supply import price increased by +142.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 46% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
