Orange Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan orange market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -4.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for orange exports from Uganda, with a approx. 98% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Rwanda amounted to +68.1%.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda totaled +67.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average orange export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -17.6% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, orange export price increased by +18.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Rwanda.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kenya amounted to +13.6% per year.
Orange Imports
Imports into Uganda
Orange imports into Uganda reduced markedly to X tons in 2022, falling by -15.5% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 386%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, orange imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 219% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of orange to Uganda, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt stood at +16.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+33.0% per year) and South Africa (+5.3% per year).
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oranges to Uganda, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Egypt totaled +15.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-12.0% per year) and South Africa (+3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average orange import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 119% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
