In 2022, the average yield of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing in Uganda stood at less than X kg per ha, leveling off at 2021. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 642% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 198%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing from Uganda, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +73.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-3.6% per year) and Burundi (+254.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing exports from Uganda, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Sudan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +94.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (+5.0% per year) and Burundi (+519.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 328% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+295.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Seeds, Fruit and Spores Used for Sowing
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing into Uganda surged to X tons, growing by 333% on 2021. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced increase. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 246% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of seed, fruit and spore used for sowing to Uganda, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+47.2% per year) and China (+21.1% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X), India ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the largest seed, fruit and spore used for sowing suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 53% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +76.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -29.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 174% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
