Perfume Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan perfume market declined to $X in 2022, falling by -12.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of perfumes and toilet waters was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, perfume exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 84%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Latvia (X kg) was the main destination for perfume exports from Uganda, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, perfume exports to Latvia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Latvia totaled -36.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-32.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-8.7% per year).
In value terms, Latvia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for perfumes and toilet waters exports from Uganda, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Latvia totaled +8.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-31.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-6.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average perfume export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, perfume export price decreased by -20.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (+68.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Perfume Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of perfumes and toilet waters were imported into Uganda; dropping by -8.2% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, perfume imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of perfume imports to Uganda, with a combined 88% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +21.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), France ($X) and China ($X) were the largest perfume suppliers to Uganda, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Spain, Indonesia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 2.6%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average perfume import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -7.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
