Pimenta Pepper Market Size in Uganda

In value terms, pimenta pepper production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of pimenta pepper in Uganda reached X kg per ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1.5%. Over the period under review, the average pimenta pepper yield hit record highs at X ton per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The pimenta pepper harvested area in Uganda amounted to X ha in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 22% against the previous year. The pimenta pepper harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of pimenta pepper increased by 6.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 819% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,207%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of pimenta pepper exports from Uganda, with a combined 36% share of total exports. Italy, Israel, France, South Sudan, South Korea, the Netherlands, the United States and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Sudan (with a CAGR of +91.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest markets for pimenta pepper exported from Uganda worldwide, together accounting for 36% of total exports. Italy, Israel, France, South Korea, the United States, the Netherlands, South Sudan and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

South Sudan, with a CAGR of +110.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pimenta pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper export price increased by +99.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 42% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pimenta Pepper Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, the amount of pimenta pepper imported into Uganda reduced rapidly to X tons, falling by -73.9% compared with 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 74%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of pimenta pepper imports to Uganda, together accounting for 82% of total imports. Rwanda, China, Turkey and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +32.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Uganda, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya stood at +21.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-8.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average pimenta pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +18.3% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+22.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
