In 2022, overseas shipments of plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials decreased by -12.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 143% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, plaits and basketwork exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 159%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for plaits and basketwork exports from Uganda, accounting for a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, plaits and basketwork exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +58.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-7.3% per year) and Germany (+33.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials exports from Uganda, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +58.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-0.3% per year) and Germany (+41.1% per year).

The average plaits and basketwork export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -9.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 104%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($X per ton) and Canada ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

Plaits and basketwork imports into Uganda reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -44.7% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 138% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plaits and basketwork imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 146%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main suppliers of plaits and basketwork imports to Uganda, with a combined 62% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials to Uganda, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Egypt totaled +22.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-4.7% per year) and China (-4.0% per year).

In 2022, the average plaits and basketwork import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 43%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+28.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
