The Ugandan plastic tableware and kitchenware market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -3.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
In 2022, shipments abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 502%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 683% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from Uganda, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), more than tenfold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan amounted to +17.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-13.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-14.2% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from Uganda, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan stood at +19.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.8% per year) and Tanzania (-13.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average plastic tableware and kitchenware export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Plastic Tableware And Kitchenware
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware, when their volume increased by 1.7% to X tons. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 814% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 532%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic tableware and kitchenware to Uganda, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya totaled +30.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+27.1% per year) and China (+4.5% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic tableware and kitchenware to Uganda, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya amounted to +21.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+31.1% per year) and China (+11.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average plastic tableware and kitchenware import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
