Plastic Bag Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan plastic bag market reached $X in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic bag production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 86% against the previous year. Plastic bag production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

Plastic bag exports from Uganda declined notably to X tons in 2022, dropping by -27.3% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 146% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from Uganda, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Burundi (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+41.0% per year) and Burundi (+7.1% per year).

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Burundi ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 83% share of total exports. The UK, Rwanda and South Sudan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +66.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+29.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Plastic Bag Imports

Imports into Uganda

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -15.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Rwanda (X tons) constituted the largest plastic bag supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic bag imports from Rwanda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Rwanda amounted to +76.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+2.6% per year) and India (+12.6% per year).

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic sacks and bags to Uganda, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Philippines stood at +94.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.6% per year) and India (+11.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 60%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the price for Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
