Plastic Closure Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Ugandan plastic closure market, when its value increased by 45% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a abrupt descent. Plastic closure consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After seven years of growth, shipments abroad of plastic stoppers, caps and closures decreased by -24.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 996%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic closure exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 828%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for plastic closure exports from Uganda, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic closure exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan stood at +51.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+47.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.9% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic stoppers, caps and closures exports from Uganda, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan amounted to +49.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+42.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average plastic closure export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, purchases abroad of plastic stoppers, caps and closures was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic closure imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic closure to Uganda, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic closure imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+22.1% per year) and China (-6.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest plastic closure suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 86% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, South Africa, with a CAGR of +22.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic closure import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
