Potato Chips Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan potato chips market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -8.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. Potato chips consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 134%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
In 2022, shipments abroad of potato chips decreased by -16.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 7,777% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 932% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X kg) was the main destination for potato chips exports from Uganda, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, potato chips exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X kg), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan totaled +26.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+27.0% per year) and Belgium (+18.5% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato chips exports from Uganda, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan amounted to +21.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+18.2% per year) and Rwanda (+29.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average potato chips export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, overseas purchases of potato chips were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kenya (X tons), the UK (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato chips imports to Uganda, together comprising 69% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, China, Belgium, the Netherlands and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +87.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato chips to Uganda, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya stood at -4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+11.2% per year) and South Africa (-1.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average potato chips import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 19%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+19.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
