Poultry Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan poultry market fell to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The average yield of poultry in Uganda totaled X kg per head in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average poultry yield remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for poultry production in Uganda; approximately mirroring 2021 figures. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by X%. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports from Uganda
In 2022, shipments abroad of poultry decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, poultry exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for poultry exports from Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, poultry exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the key foreign market for poultry exports from Uganda, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burundi ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kenya totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average poultry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Poultry Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of poultry, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, poultry imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of poultry imports to Uganda, with a combined X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest poultry suppliers to Uganda were Brazil ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. Poland, Thailand and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
