Market Size for Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in Uganda

In 2022, the Ugandan market for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption showed prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in Uganda

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 123%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries in Uganda stood at less than X kg per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry harvested area in Uganda was estimated at less than X ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Exports from Uganda

For the third year in a row, Uganda recorded growth in overseas shipments of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, which increased by 5.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 994% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 892%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Canada (X tons) was the main destination for raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports from Uganda, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada stood at +158.1%.

In value terms, Canada ($X) also remains the key foreign market for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries exports from Uganda.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada totaled +117.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 89% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the UK amounted to +12.3% per year.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, the amount of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries imported into Uganda declined to X tons, with a decrease of -12.6% on 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,422%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,125%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X kg), the Netherlands (X kg) and Belgium (X kg) were the main suppliers of raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports to Uganda, together comprising 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +50.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries to Uganda, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at -5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+43.4% per year) and Belgium (+16.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry import price increased by +59.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+125.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
