In value terms, production of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports of Salted, Dried or Smoked Meat, and Offal
Exports from Uganda
In 2022, overseas shipments of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 8,510% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 9,784%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal from Uganda, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (X tons), sixfold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam totaled +50.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Somalia (+20.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal exported from Uganda were Vietnam ($X), Somalia ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +49.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Somalia (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Salted, Dried or Smoked Meat, and Offal
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal into Uganda dropped markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -24.9% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 762%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1,230% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal supplier to Uganda, with a 94% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 2.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya amounted to +22.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+18.6% per year) and Italy (+29.1% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal to Uganda, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 1.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya amounted to +29.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+27.8% per year) and Italy (+28.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
