In value terms, preserved sardines exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,921% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sardines exports from Uganda, with a approx. 98% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 260% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, preserved sardines imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Morocco (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sardines imports to Uganda, together comprising 96% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +83.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sardines (prepared or preserved) to Uganda, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Morocco was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+126.5% per year) and Thailand (+22.2% per year).

The average preserved sardines import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 14%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+23.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
