The Ugandan market for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 140%. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations decreased by -7.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations from Uganda, together comprising 89% of total exports. Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burundi (with a CAGR of +74.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Kenya ($X) and Burundi ($X) were the largest markets for shampoo, hair lacquer and other preparations exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 94% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +56.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 49%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Shampoos, Hair Lacquers And Other Preparations
Imports into Uganda
Imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations into Uganda reduced markedly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -41.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 296% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 390%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of shampoo, hair lacquer and other preparations to Uganda, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya totaled +11.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+9.8% per year) and China (+22.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest shampoo, hair lacquer and other preparations suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 77% of total imports. Egypt, South Africa, India, the UK and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +41.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
