Sorghum Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of sorghum increased by 356% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,936%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 2,638% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Uganda, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan totaled +107.1%.

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Uganda, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -23.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 34%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+29.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sorghum, when their volume decreased by -9.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 325%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, sorghum imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 278%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) was the main supplier of sorghum to Uganda, accounting for a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya (X tons), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Tanzania amounted to +79.0%.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sorghum to Uganda, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Tanzania stood at +74.9%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sorghum import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania stood at $X per ton.
