Market Size for Special-Purpose Electric Lamps and Lighting Fittings in Uganda

The Ugandan market for special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption posted a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a precipitous setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 1,917% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sudan (X units), Kenya (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) were the main destinations of exports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings from Uganda, together comprising 96% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +6.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings exports from Uganda, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by South Sudan, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sudan amounted to -4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-22.7% per year) and South Sudan (-14.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -22.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Special-Purpose Electric Lamps and Lighting Fittings

Imports into Uganda

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings increased by 11% to X units in 2022. In general, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 184%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest special-purpose electric lamp and lighting fitting supplier to Uganda, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (X units), with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +6.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+4.6% per year) and Portugal (+94.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings to Uganda, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+19.8% per year) and Portugal (+55.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings amounted to $X per unit, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 63% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
