Spice Market Size in Uganda

After two years of decline, the Ugandan spice market increased by X% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Spice Production in Uganda

The average yield of spices in Uganda totaled X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Exports from Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of spices increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spice exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by X%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for spice exports from Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, spice exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (X% per year) and Germany (X% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for spices exports from Uganda, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).

In 2022, the average spice export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spice Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X tons of spices were imported into Uganda; jumping by X% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spice imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main supplier of spice to Uganda, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, spice imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (X% per year) and India (X% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
