Plastic Support Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan plastic support market rose notably to $X in 2022, increasing by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Plastic Support Production in Uganda

In value terms, plastic support production rose rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 46%. Plastic support production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics, when their volume decreased by -24.3% to X tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 478% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic support exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 523%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for plastic support exports from Uganda, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic support exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), fourfold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan stood at +51.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+45.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.2% per year).

In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for spools, cops and similar supports of plastics exports from Uganda, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Sudan amounted to +49.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+42.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average plastic support export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Plastic Support Imports

Imports into Uganda

Plastic support imports into Uganda totaled X tons in 2022, picking up by 5% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main plastic support supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya amounted to +13.2%.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics to Uganda, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya amounted to +6.3%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic support import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 12%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya amounted to $X per ton.
