Sugary Soft Drink Market Size in Uganda
In 2022, the Ugandan sugary soft drink market increased by 0.3% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +68.8% against 2017 indices. Sugary soft drink consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Sugary Soft Drink Production in Uganda
In value terms, sugary soft drink production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Sugary Soft Drink Exports
Exports from Uganda
In 2022, approx. X litres of sugary soft drinks were exported from Uganda; rising by 12% on 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 3,035% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugary soft drink exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 3,661% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X litres) was the main destination for sugary soft drink exports from Uganda, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, sugary soft drink exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kenya (X litres), with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan amounted to +93.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.4% per year) and Kenya (+17.1% per year).
In value terms, South Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugary soft drinks exports from Uganda, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Sudan stood at +87.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.4% per year) and Kenya (+25.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sugary soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda
Sugary soft drink imports into Uganda dropped to X litres in 2022, declining by -9.1% against the year before. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 75% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sugary soft drink imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Austria (X litres) constituted the largest sugary soft drink supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, sugary soft drink imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X litres), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X litres), with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Austria totaled -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+47.9% per year) and South Africa (+22.8% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drinks to Uganda, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Austria stood at -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+22.3% per year) and Tanzania (+39.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sugary soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sugary soft drink import price increased by +76.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Kenya ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
