Sunflower Seed Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan sunflower seed market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted a prominent expansion. Sunflower seed consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. Sunflower seed production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The average yield of sunflower seed in Uganda declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 5.4%. The sunflower seed yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sunflower seed harvested area in Uganda declined modestly to X ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 6.2%. The sunflower seed harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports from Uganda
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sunflower seed, when their volume decreased by -22.1% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 2,457% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sunflower seed exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 5,344%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for sunflower seed exports from Uganda, accounting for a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, sunflower seed exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania stood at +10.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-10.2% per year) and India (-11.6% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest markets for sunflower seed exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 96% share of total exports. Rwanda and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.3%.
Rwanda, with a CAGR of +25.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sunflower seed export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+20.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sunflower Seed Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of sunflower seed were imported into Uganda; rising by 51% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 95%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sunflower seed imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 99%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of sunflower seed imports to Uganda, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest sunflower seed suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +54.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average sunflower seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
