T-Shirt Market Size in Uganda
In 2022, the Ugandan t-shirt market decreased by -17.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. T-shirt consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
T-Shirt Exports
Exports from Uganda
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of t-shirts decreased by -32% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,997%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, t-shirt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 2,088% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X units) was the main destination for t-shirt exports from Uganda, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, t-shirt exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X units), with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to +72.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (+80.5% per year) and France (+58.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for t-shirts exports from Uganda, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to +60.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+61.3% per year) and Denmark (+62.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average t-shirt export price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 114% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
T-Shirt Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, purchases abroad of t-shirts decreased by -21.4% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, t-shirt imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 184%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X units) constituted the largest supplier of t-shirt to Uganda, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, t-shirt imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X units), fivefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India amounted to +45.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+53.5% per year) and China (+7.7% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of t-shirts to Uganda, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India stood at +31.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-1.0% per year) and Spain (+51.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average t-shirt import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 65%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the price for Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
