Taro (Cocoyam) Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, the Ugandan taro (cocoyam) market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, (cocoyam) production decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Taro (cocoyam) production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average taro (cocoyam) yield in Uganda stood at less than X kg per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The taro (cocoyam) harvested area in Uganda was estimated at less than X ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of taro decreased by -41.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 289%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 364%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for taro (cocoyam) exports from Uganda, with a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, taro (cocoyam) exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X kg), with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France stood at +33.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+42.1% per year) and the UK (+20.2% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for taro exports from Uganda, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +50.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+34.9% per year) and Canada (+28.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average taro (cocoyam) export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 91% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
