Tufted Carpet Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan tufted carpet market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 39% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Tufted carpet consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings were finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 1,805%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tufted carpet exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 3,034% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Canada (X square meters) was the main destination for tufted carpet exports from Uganda, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, tufted carpet exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X square meters), threefold. Rwanda (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada amounted to +63.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+64.9% per year) and Rwanda (+23.5% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X), Kenya ($X) and Rwanda ($X) constituted the largest markets for tufted carpet exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 81% share of total exports. South Sudan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

South Sudan, with a CAGR of +96.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tufted carpet export price amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 64%. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+27.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, the amount of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings imported into Uganda soared to X square meters, rising by 49% on the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 107%. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tufted carpet imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 143%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of tufted carpet to Uganda, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, tufted carpet imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X square meters), threefold. Egypt (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +11.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+11.2% per year) and Egypt (-12.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest tufted carpet suppliers to Uganda, with a combined 52% share of total imports. The United States, Turkey, India, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Italy and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

India, with a CAGR of +22.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tufted carpet import price amounted to $X per square meter, which is down by -14.1% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per square meter), while the price for Egypt ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
