Exports from Uganda
In 2022, approx. X tons of welded and cold-formed sections of steel were exported from Uganda; waning by -19.4% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 217%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 220% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for welded and cold-formed steel sections exports from Uganda, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X kg), threefold. Sudan (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda totaled +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+1.3% per year) and Sudan (-54.4% per year).
In value terms, Burundi ($X) remains the key foreign market for welded and cold-formed sections of steel exports from Uganda, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Burundi amounted to +11.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-9.7% per year) and Sudan (-56.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for welded and cold-formed sections of steel amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, welded and cold-formed steel sections export price decreased by -6.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 91%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Welded And Cold-Formed Sections Of Steel
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports into Uganda expanded modestly to X tons, increasing by 3.7% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 487%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 223%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of welded and cold-formed steel sections to Uganda, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +24.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+33.2% per year) and India (+36.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of welded and cold-formed sections of steel to Uganda, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +38.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+31.6% per year) and India (+53.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for welded and cold-formed sections of steel stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 106%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
