Over the period under review, exports faced a significant decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 151%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) and South Africa (X litres) were the main destinations of wine of fresh grapes exports from Uganda, with a combined 81% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Burundi, Argentina and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for wine of fresh grapes exported from Uganda were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Sudan ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports.
South Sudan, with a CAGR of -21.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average wine of fresh grapes export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 44%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda
In 2022, the amount of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) imported into Uganda skyrocketed to X litres, jumping by 17% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres) constituted the largest wine of fresh grapes supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X litres), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X litres), with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +9.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+13.7% per year) and Spain (+5.0% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) to Uganda, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from South Africa amounted to +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+9.1% per year) and Spain (+4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wine of fresh grapes import price amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the price for Rwanda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+16.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
