The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 58%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of wooden furniture of a kind used in the bedroom decreased by -43.3% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 648% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, wooden bedroom furniture exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 745% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units) was the main destination for wooden bedroom furniture exports from Uganda, with a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, wooden bedroom furniture exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X units), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +27.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-16.3% per year) and the UK (-9.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for wooden furniture of a kind used in the bedroom exports from Uganda, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +24.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-16.4% per year) and the UK (-12.8% per year).

The average wooden bedroom furniture export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 69%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X units of wooden furniture of a kind used in the bedroom were imported into Uganda; almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 91%. Imports peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wooden bedroom furniture imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 105%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X units) constituted the largest wooden bedroom furniture supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, wooden bedroom furniture imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey amounted to +41.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+12.1% per year) and Italy (+19.5% per year).

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the price for Italy ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
