The Ukrainian activated natural mineral products market reduced dramatically to $X in 2021, falling by -20.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of activated natural mineral products increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 202%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for activated natural mineral products exports from Ukraine, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, activated natural mineral products exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uzbekistan (X tons), twofold. Moldova (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -32.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+25.4% per year) and Moldova (-18.2% per year).

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Russia ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for activated natural mineral products exported from Ukraine worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +27.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average activated natural mineral products export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -21.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 198% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of activated natural mineral products imported into Ukraine plummeted to X tons, reducing by -23.8% on the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of activated natural mineral products to Ukraine, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, activated natural mineral products imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +7.4%.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of activated natural mineral products to Ukraine, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Greece ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average activated natural mineral products import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 9% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for India amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+3.0%).
