Market Size for Aluminium Casks, Drums, Cans, Boxes and Similar Containers in Ukraine

For the third consecutive year, the Ukrainian market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production of attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, overseas shipments of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -51% to X units, falling for the fifth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X units) was the main destination for exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Ukraine, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Georgia (X units), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Poland totaled +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+64.2% per year) and Russia (-43.6% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X), Georgia ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

Georgia, with a CAGR of +60.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8.6%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, when their volume decreased by -2.8% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 59%. Imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 360%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X units) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container to Ukraine, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X units), more than tenfold. Russia (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland totaled +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+38.3% per year) and Russia (+7.0% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Ukraine, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+34.9% per year) and Russia (+5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 190% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while the price for Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
