Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved anchovies exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Georgia (X tons) was the main destination for preserved anchovies exports from Ukraine, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved anchovies exports to Georgia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tons), twofold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Georgia amounted to +18.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (-11.8% per year) and Azerbaijan (+16.3% per year).

In value terms, Georgia ($X) remains the key foreign market for anchovies (prepared or preserved) exports from Ukraine, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Georgia stood at +20.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (-10.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average preserved anchovies export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+41.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of anchovies (prepared or preserved) decreased by -12% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, preserved anchovies imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 94%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved anchovies imports to Ukraine, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +112.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of anchovies (prepared or preserved) to Ukraine, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Vietnam stood at +9.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+54.5% per year) and Italy (+55.8% per year).

The average preserved anchovies import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 51%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
